What is cocaine residue analysis?

Cocaine residue analysis measures cocaine and benzoylecgonine, its main breakdown product, on surfaces such as benchtops, vehicle interiors, soft furnishings and HVAC filters. Samples are collected with wipes or as bulk material and analysed in a laboratory. Finding benzoylecgonine alongside cocaine indicates residue that has broken down over time, which helps date and interpret contamination.

What is cocaine?A stimulant with a growing footprint

Cocaine is a stimulant alkaloid extracted from the leaves of the coca plant, native to South America. It acts by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin, which produces a short, intense high. Its effects are brief, which drives repeated use in a single session, and repeated use is what builds up residue in a space.

Cocaine is encountered in two main forms. Cocaine hydrochloride is a white powder that is usually snorted and sometimes injected. Freebase and crack cocaine are forms that can be smoked. Powder use leaves concentrated residue where the drug is handled and prepared, while smoking spreads residue across surfaces in much the same way as smoked methamphetamine.

Wastewater monitoring in Australia has recorded growing cocaine consumption in recent years, and cocaine use is strongly associated with nightlife, hospitality and entertainment settings. That shapes where contamination is found. Hotel rooms, short-stay rentals, bars, venue bathrooms, hire cars, rideshare and fleet vehicles are all common sampling locations.

Cocaine analysis is also increasingly requested by property managers and owners after problem tenancies, and by businesses that need to verify their cleaning programs or respond to an incident on their premises.

The science of cocaine residue, and what benzoylecgonine tells us

Cocaine is a tropane alkaloid with the formula C17H21NO4 and a molar mass of 303.36 g/mol. Its structure contains two ester groups, and those esters are its weak point. In the presence of moisture, cocaine is gradually hydrolysed to benzoylecgonine, C16H19NO4, at 289.33 g/mol.

Benzoylecgonine is also the main compound the human body produces when it breaks down cocaine, which is why it is the target in urine drug analysis. On a surface, its presence tells a different story. It shows that cocaine residue has been in place long enough, and in humid enough conditions, to begin breaking down. Measuring both compounds together gives an indication of whether residue is recent or aged.

Surface type has a strong effect on what is recovered. Hard, non-porous surfaces such as glass, stone, tiles, dashboards and toilet cisterns hold powder residue on the surface where a wipe collects it efficiently. Fabrics, carpets, upholstery and filter media trap fine particles within their fibres, which calls for a sampling approach matched to the material and the question being asked.

HVAC filters deserve special mention. Because they draw air from an entire space, filter media can act as a record of what has been circulating in a building, including in rooms that were never sampled directly.

Cocaine in Australia, where residue is being found

Cocaine in Australia has historically been more expensive and less widely used than methamphetamine, but that picture has been changing. Wastewater monitoring has recorded growing consumption, and large seizures at the border continue to show strong supply into the country.

Cocaine use tends to cluster around nightlife, hospitality and social settings, and around higher-income households. As a result, requests for cocaine residue analysis come from a wider range of clients than methamphetamine analysis: hotel and short-stay operators, venue managers, fleet and hire car businesses, employers and private owners, as well as property managers and remediators.

Because cocaine is so often used with alcohol and other drugs, a cocaine detection is frequently the first sign of a broader problem. Many clients start with cocaine analysis on a few key surfaces and move to the comprehensive panel if the results warrant it.

Why cocaine residue,is a risk for properties and businesses

Cocaine residue is less studied than methamphetamine residue, and there is no national residential guideline for it. That does not make it harmless. It means decisions rest more heavily on accurate measurement and sound interpretation.

Contact exposure

Powder residue on benchtops, tables and bathroom surfaces transfers readily to hands. In family homes and short-stay accommodation, children can be exposed through touch and hand to mouth behaviour.

Vehicles and fleets

Hire cars, rideshare and fleet vehicles can carry residue on steering wheels, consoles, door cards and upholstery, exposing the next driver or passenger and creating reputational risk.

Venues and accommodation

Bars, clubs and hotels can accumulate residue in bathrooms and private areas. Measured results support cleaning programs and help demonstrate responsible management.

Mixed contamination

Cocaine is frequently found alongside other drugs. A cocaine detection is often a reason to consider a full panel for the same locations.

How EnviroForce Labs helps,trace-level results you can act on

We match the sampling method to the material, analyse for both cocaine and benzoylecgonine and report every result digitally, so property owners, fleet managers and venue operators get a clear answer quickly.

  1. 1

Match the method to the material

Call us before sampling soft furnishings or HVAC media so the approach suits the surface and the question you need answered.

  2. 2

    Collect wipes or bulk samples

Hard surfaces are wiped inside a 100 cm² template. Filters and some fabrics may be submitted as bulk samples.

  3. 3

    Digital custody throughout

Every sample is registered in our Digital Chain of Custody from collection to reporting.

  4. 4

    Both compounds reported

Cocaine and benzoylecgonine are reported separately for each sample within 24 hours, or 12 on priority.

Wipe results are expressed per area sampled and bulk materials per sample, and every certificate shows the reporting limit, so a not detected result can be relied upon.

From report to remediation plan, cleaning, replacing and verifying

Cocaine results give decontamination companies and cleaning contractors a measured starting point and a measured finish line, which is especially important when there is no single guideline to work to.

  • Agree the targetWithout a national residential guideline, the owner, hygienist and remediator agree criteria suited to the property and its use before work starts.
  • Focus on hotspotsPowder residue is often concentrated on specific surfaces. Results by location show exactly where to clean and where not to spend time.
  • Replace what cannot be cleanedHigh results on filters, fabrics and porous surfaces can make replacement the most reliable option.
  • Use the age signalA high share of benzoylecgonine suggests older residue that may have spread into soft materials, which can widen the scope.
  • Verify and documentRetesting the same locations after cleaning documents the result for owners, insurers and future occupants.

For vehicles and accommodation, the verified result can be kept with service or housekeeping records as evidence that the issue was identified and resolved.

How to collect samples, step by step

Good results start with good sampling. We recommend that samples are collected by a NATA accredited company, because the right method depends on the site and the analysis requirements. The steps below outline the NIOSH 9111 surface wipe method, the most common approach for drug residue on hard surfaces.

Call before you sample

Particularly for soft furnishings, upholstery and HVAC filters, where the method depends on the material.

Pick the likely hotspots

Bathroom benches, toilet cisterns, tables, bedside tables, consoles, steering wheels and door cards.

Change gloves every time

A fresh pair for every sample prevents carrying residue from one surface to the next.

Wipe the template area

Overlapping strokes in one direction, fold inward and repeat at right angles.

Bag bulk samples separately

Seal filters or fabric samples in their own containers so they cannot contaminate wipes.

Register and dispatch

Record every sample in the Digital Chain of Custody, include a field blank and send to our laboratory.

Frequently askedquestions

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most about cocaine analysis. Can't find yours? Call the laboratory on 1300 522 115.

What is benzoylecgonine?

Benzoylecgonine is the main breakdown product of cocaine. It forms when cocaine is exposed to moisture and when the body metabolises the drug. On surfaces, it indicates cocaine residue that has aged.

Is there an Australian guideline for cocaine residue?

There is no national residential guideline for cocaine residue. Results are interpreted against the property, its intended use and criteria agreed with your hygienist or remediator.

Can you analyse vehicles for cocaine?

Yes. Vehicle interiors are one of the most common cocaine analysis requests, including dashboards, consoles, steering wheels, door cards and upholstery.

Can HVAC filters be analysed?

Yes. Filters can be submitted as bulk samples and give an indication of what has been circulating in a building. Call us first to confirm the best approach.

Should I analyse for other drugs as well?

Cocaine is often found with other drugs. If the history of the site is unknown, the comprehensive panel covers cocaine and eight other compounds on the same wipe.

How quickly are results available?

Within 24 hours of the samples reaching the laboratory, or 12 hours on priority.
